Ratchet wheel translation

For the sake of having fun with this, I'm going to avoid existing research as much as possible and just try to see what the da Vinci notes and sketches themselves reveal.

In order to do this, I've convinced my Mom (who is Italian, with a degree from the University of Rome) to see what she can translate from these notes.

I've flipped the notes to "un-mirror" them, since Leonardo wrote many of his notes in a mirrored script. I think I read once that this was probably to avoid smearing the ink, since he was a lefty.

This looks really cool, JOhn. Silvia mentioned your blog in our homeschool list. My oldest daughter owns Maya and works out there at Rhythm and Hues...this would be a great project for a kid interested in this type of thing. My grandchildren that I homeschool here in Virginia aren't old enough for such a complex project, but we will be interested in seeing the results of your Maya constructions. Is it possible for them to be online when you are through?

Hi Virginia, your daughter is Gael Harlow, isn't she? I worked with her at Imageworks!

That's a great suggestion -- I'll post the models online for people to download. There's a site called TurboSquid.com where I'll offer them for free.
